Winterbourne House (2.4 miles)

2.4 miles (8 minute drive) from The Beeches
Built in 1903 for John and Margaret Nettleford, Winterbourne House is a rare surviving example of an Arts and Crafts inspired suburban villa and garden. John MacDonald Nicolson was the last private owner of the house and he was also an enthusiastic gardener. When he died in 1944 he bequeathed the house and garden to the University Of Birmingham. It became the university’s botanic garden where new areas of teaching and conservation were developed.

The 7 acre grade II listed garden offers colour and interest throughout the year. It is home to a beautiful walled garden, striking colour themed borders, an original sandstone rock garden and stream side planting. The garden is also home to plants from around the world, with collections from China, North and South America and the Alpine regions of the globe.

Depending on the time of year opening time do vary, so it’s best to check beforehand on www.winterbourne.org.uk. The site also has information on their programme of special events, open days, special interest tours, concerts and an Edwardian fete.
